2016 Art Competition Rules

California Pioneer Spirit in Art

Theme: California Pioneer Spirit in Art.
Artwork will be displayed in the Folsom History Museum starting January 29, 2016 and is to depict early contributions made by Native Americans, African Americans, Spanish, Catholics, Mormons, Chinese, etc. to the development of California.

Eligibility: This juried competition and exhibition is free and open to all California residents.

Media: Various media are welcome. Entries may include but are not limited to – painting, sculpture, drawings, textiles, ceramics, photography, and printmaking.

Exhibition Specifications: Work accepted for the exhibition must arrive ready to install with a wire picture hanging system — please no saw tooth hangers. Use Plexiglas on work exceeding 28” by 36” (or 1015 square inches) rather than glass if it is required for artwork. Three dimensional and assembled works must be stable and safe for viewing. Art that is not ready to hang or that does not exhibit good craftsmanship may be omitted from the exhibit. Work that differs significantly from the entry images may be disqualified. Any work containing unacceptable subject matter as determined by CPHF will be withdrawn. Work may be hand delivered or shipped to the museum. Hand delivered work must be picked up from the museum by the date specified (see deadlines.) The Folsom History Museum is not responsible for work left beyond the date specified. Shipped work must be sent in a reusable container with return shipping prepaid. No packing peanuts please. Work should be securely packaged and clearly labeled. Accepted work will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition.

Images: Only digital images of artwork (or a photograph) will be accepted for consideration. Artwork must meet the following requirements. To participate, please send a digital image (or photograph) of artwork to be reviewed and a completed entry form.

File Name: Artist’s first and last name and entry number 1, 2, or 3. (Example: samjones2.jpg)

File Size: Images must be sent in a JPEG format (72 dpi or higher resolution) unless an 8 x 10 inch photograph of artwork is sent. Include your name and the corresponding slide number in the JPEG title.

Artwork Size: Artists may submit up to three entries. Two dimensional art must not exceed 48×48 inches (including frame, if one is used.) Three-dimensional work must not exceed 70 pounds.

First Prize $500
Second Prize $300
Third Prize $150
A Special Award of $250 will be awarded for best artwork depicting Mormon influences in early California history

Insurance will not be provided for any artwork while on the museum premises. The foundation and museum bear no responsibility and are not liable for damage to, theft of, or change in the condition of artwork while on the museum premises or for damages occurring during shipping.

Deadlines:

January 8, 2016 Digital images (or photographs of artwork) due for prejudging.
January 12, 2016  Artists will be notified by email that artwork is accepted or declined no later than this date.
January 15 & 16, 2016 Accepted artwork to be hand delivered or sent to:

January 29, 2016 Artist’s Reception: 7 PM at the Folsom History Museum.
January 30 through February 29, 2016 Exhibited in the Folsom History Museum. Please note: Artwork must be picked up at the museum by March 5, 2016 (museum is closed on Mondays).
